Malaysia – KIDS: Bits & Bytes
Fondation Rolf Schnyder is committed to empowering marginalized communities through innovative educational initiatives. Our Kids Bits and Bytes program, in cooperation with the Sarawak Ministry of Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development (KPWK) and Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus, provides digital literacy classes to underprivileged preschool children. The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on August 26th, 2022 was witnessed by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and Minister of Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development, Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah, who emphasized the importance of equipping all children in Sarawak with digital literacy skills so that they are not left behind in the digitalization era.
This program aims to provide computer literacy and coding training to develop vital computational thinking and reasoning skills that are essential for a technology-reliant future. Our pilot project with the SeDidik Centres focuses on helping the B40 group of preschool children learn digital literacy skills, with the objective of reducing the pre-school gap between children in rural and urban areas. SeDidik is an Early Childhood Education and Care institution under the Ministry of Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Woman, Family and Childhood Development Sarawak that provides quality and affordable Early Childhood Education and Care services.
Our hope is to expand this program to include all SeDidik centres in Sarawak after the pilot. We are committed to working with local partners to overcome obstacles to ensure that digital literacy classes are made possible for all children, regardless of their socio-economic status.
